By starting a complementary currency, as has been done in many communities throughout the world, we can take the initiative and trade goods and services amongst each other. This can provide work for the unemployed and sever our reliance on international corporate investment. It also engenders a stronger sense of community and leads to greater sustainability.
If things are going to be as dire as predicted, this sort of thing might be of real benefit. For more information on complementary currencies and time banks see: http://bit.ly/9NnIjw, http://bit.ly/9BAJcO, http://www.timebanks.org/, http://www.transaction.net/money/community/.
If anyone is interested in starting something up like this, or knows of a viable one already set-up, please leave a comment. I'd like to get one started in Ireland. I believe it will of great benefit to us all.
